With the recent move, it's been difficult to write, or to find time to do... anything! I have many reviews that I owe. I am slowly getting back into the saddle of blogging.

This particular review was given to me by Va Va Voom. We have recently become one of their newest reviewers. I am thrilled that I had the opportunity to read "Screw The Rose, Send Me The Thorns" by Philip Miller and Molly Devon.

Immediately, within the first few pages of reading, I was hooked! Screw the Roses (as I shall call it from here on out) is an educational and instructional book about "The romance and sexual sorcery of sadomasochism". Philip and Molly are a couple with over 20 years of experience in the BDSM world. This book was originally published in 1995. They offer an intelligent and entertaining view into this "dark" world. It is written in such a manner that people of all experience levels would enjoy it and walk away having learned something new.

Chapter 1 offers you an introduction to your hosts, Phillip and Molly and what they intend the book to be about.  They go into detail what sadomasocism IS and IS NOT. That is then followed by the introduction into "scene speak" and learning the lingo and terms and labels. Chapter 1 covers everything from what it means to be dominant, submissive, a switch, masochist, tops and bottoms, gay SM scenes, and oh so much more. (You can see how I got hooked right away right?)

Chapter 2 dives right into the important stuff. Communication, trust and safety. The authors really push that safety above all else is the most important key to whatever "play" you may do. Once you've established that you are, in fact, in a safe and trust worthy situation, the chapter goes on to tell you how you can explore many things. Such as using the mind as an erogenous zone, conditioning, visualization. sensory relocation and so much more.

Chapter 3 gives you the run down on "The Politics of Very Strange Bedfellows, Sensible SM Relationships, and Dangerous Liaisons." It tells the reader what to look out for in other people as you begin your search for your partner. For women, it can help weed out the creeps and for men, it can help weed out the needy. Chapter 3 gives you safety suggestions on how to
meet someone in person for the first time. It should be noted that since this book was first published in 1995, it's a little outdated as far as the internet has to go. So much has changed online since 1995. You can pretty much skip any reference to "message boards" and they won't have any of the newer kink sites listed.

Chapter 4 begins talking about how to introduce "kink" into your already established relationship and how to go out there and find it. It gives suggestions on how negotiations between Doms and subs can be handled.  What I liked about Chapter 4 is it listed and went into detail, about the different forms of submission out there. This I found very helpful. I'll list what they come up with, but I'm afraid you'll have to get your own copy of the book to understand what it all means.

  • Level 1- Conditional Compliance
  • Level 2- Restricted Ongoing Acquiescence
  • Level 3- Provisional Submission
  • Level 4- The Covenant of Dominance and Submission
  • Level 5- Absolute Ownership


Chapter 5 was specifically written by Philip for the men, but you know what? I peeked anyways. *giggles* I have to say, his advice was pretty good. In order to be successful and get the most out of a BDSM type relationship, men have to learn how to slow things down. How to really make love to a woman. He gives pointers to men on how to understand just how different the woman's mind and body work than their own and how a woman's mind and body are intertwined.

Chapter 6 is a fun chapter that goes into all the different kinds of play and tools used. Anything from fire and ice, electro-torture, anal play and training, fisting and oh so much more! (can't give away all of the secrets can I?)

Chapter 7 is another exhilarating chapter. This one goes into bondage. It explains how you need a plan and how to perform "bondage safety". This chapter also gives you the "Ten rules to be bound by" and gives you an illustrated example of the "anatomy for safer bondage".(click pic to make bigger). This chapter also gives suggestions on what you should be doing during your first rope session, your 2nd rope session and so on.

Chapter 8, Human Bondage technique! Oh what fun! This chapter shows you how to use rope and create ankle and wrist bondage as well as oriental rope
dresses. There are detailed diagrams to help you out! This chapter not only talks about rope as bondage, but also blindfolds, gags, hoods, plastic wrap and many more "specialty items".

Chapter 9 starts getting into the more serious stuff. This chapter is written by Philip and it discusses the ins and outs of flogging. This chapter discusses such important things as environment, how to start and end a session, your positioning, and how to properly use a flogger. Philip has ten commandments of flagellation and I think they are very good ones. Click the pic to read his Commandments of Flagellation, but you'll have to read the book to get the details.

Chapter 10 really gets into "the beating". In this chapter are tips for how
to prepare the skin for a beating and where to hit (with chart). This
chapter goes into everything from spanking, paddling, caning, whipping,
slapping, and strokes. That's just naming a few things that you'll get out
of it. It also dives into a tutorial on how to properly use a whip,
including cat-style and bull whip.

Chapter 11 goes into what is happening to both top and bottom during a scene
such as those encountered in previous chapters. It goes into the endorphin
rush and "sub space" and also talks about Dom space as well. This chapter
goes into the different levels of pain and how they become pleasure.

Chapter 12, one of my fave subjects, "How to make the upper cheeks red".
This chapter talks about humiliation, embarrassment and the mindfuck. Oh
what a wonderful chapter and subject matter! How I love a good mind fuck.
Remember men, a woman's body is so closely linked to her mind.  In this
chapter there is talk about public play, dressing and verbal abuse, as well
as sexual denial. Probably the most interesting section, one that I find
true, is the section that discusses emotional growth through SM. It's
interesting how something that can be so humiliating can make someone feel
so much more empowered. Even if they are on the receiving end.

Chapter 13, the last chapter, oddly enough, talks about your dungeon. It gives advice on furnishing your own dungeon, life with children, and how to save money and make many of these items yourself. It lists the goodies into groups, the torture group, the sex-toy group and the bondage group and tells you where you can go to buy these items. This chapter also tells you how to make many of these items yourself! There are also tips on how to travel with your toys.

Finally, the book closes with a glossary of terms and an appendix.

 I really enjoyed reading this book very much. Philip and Molly wrote it in such a way that it was both informational and entertaining. Each chapter included a story of their own experiences in certain situations and it is always fascinating to read another person's personal story. Anyone can enjoy this book, whether you are just getting started or you have years of experience in the lifestyle. The book includes many pictures as well as diagrams to help you build/make your own things. I appreciate how much emphasis is put on safety. I think that is so very important.

Finally, since this book was originally published in 1995, please keep in mind that some of the resources may be outdated. Do not buy this book if you
think it is going to send you to the current kink websites of today. That's not to say that some of the sites or businesses listed in the book do not exist today. If they do, well then that should be a pretty good sign that they are quality.

10 Function Flexor Stimulator Purple DolphinThis rubber vibe definitely offers satisfaction.  Its powerful vibration is a pleasant surprise. I enjoy the different permutations.  So often a vibe’s settings are just different speeds, the Flexor however, will pulse several different ways allowing you to pick your pleasure.  (My favorite is a three-stage increasing intensity pulse.)  The simple push-button controls allow you to scroll through to find the one you fancy.  There are no distracting lights or multiple setting buttons to mess with. The ten settings give you plenty to choose from.  The flexor remembers the last setting so you can get right back to where you got left off. 

It has a lovely smooth rubber head allowing for easy entry.  Its wide shaft tip is enjoyable without being overwhelming.   The ribbed and textured shaft is bendable, letting you adjust it “just so” to get at your g spot.  The texturing adds a lovely sensation, but it can get abrasive so use lots of lube. 

The Flexor is also waterproof for use in shower or tub, making this a versatile toy indeed. The controls are sealed in the end, making them both waterproof and accessible.  There is no front panel to let water in. Also, the batteries install directly in the end of the toy.  There is no battery cartridge to complicate the fun. The battery position markings are right on the edge of the compartment- hard to see at first, but once they’re installed the battery cover twists securely on and the fun begins.
 
The dolphin-shaped clitoral stimulator vibrates along with the shaft so there are no separate vibration controls to think about.   I found it difficult to position the clitoral stimulator right where I wanted it.   Needing a lot of clitoral sensation, I enjoyed just placing the tip on my clit for more intense vibration.  It certainly did the trick.

A few pleasant practical notes: The package is a simple tab closure, no having to get a knife just to get at your purchase.  The Flexor comes shrink-wrapped inside the easy-open box, ensuring cleanliness without all the bother of a sealed-shut plastic package.  Also, the Flexor has a flat bottom, allowing it to stand up.  Not only does that mean that it will stay clean and dry on your counter, but it will display well on a shelf if you so desire.  Another aspect of its good design is the handle.  There is a decent length to hold allowing just the right leverage and angle.  The only thing I would ask in this regard would be for there to be rubber on the hand grip.  It can get slippery once lube is in play.

While I tried the purple dolphin, the Flexor is also available in blue with an elephant shaped stimulator, as well as clear with a bunny, and pink with a teddy.  This toy works well especially for women whose g spots are slightly out of reach for solid crook-shaped vibes.  The customizable shaft and vibration patterns make for a truly personal experience.  Overall I would give the Flexor Dolphin a positive rating.

Alright, in case you haven't heard I was picked to become an official TOY REVIEWER with Va Va Voom (http://www.va-va-voom.net). I will be devoting this blog entirely to the review of thier products and the products that I rate are provided to me by Va Va Voom and not by the manufactures of the products themselves to give you a fair and impartial review of the different products they carry.

The product that I am reviewing today is the Tera Patrick Fleshlight. A little background you should know is that I am a happy customer of Interactive Life Form's Fleshlight, in which I own their Stamina Training Unit. I purchased this about a couple years ago and its Superskin insert is lined with bumps on the inside designed for maximum stimulation. It does have a generic vaginal opening encased in a black flashlight looking case so not to give away its real purpose.

When I went though the many products that Va Va Voom carries, it shouldn't come as a surprise when one of my first choices was another Fleshlight. Now I have researched other products that Interactive Life Form carries and I have been interested in the more life like openings that are made with live models that provide their unique details for the superskin. Even more intesting was the new Lotus texture that is, as they say "unmatched in realism and sensation".

So when I received the plain box yesterday, I knew I was in for a real treat. Upon opening this box was the real surprise. ILF makes a real statement for their Fleshlight girls by providing thier product in a very high class package. You are also treated with a sexy picture of the model who ILF casted for their opening, in this case Tera Patrick.

 

The case has the same shape as my other Fleshlight, except the color was white with a pearl reflection.  The real surprise was yet to come.  Upon uncapping the end it was very apparent that this was going to be a very unique experience.  The opening looked very real, and very tight.  I knew the texture was a lotus and before I tried it out, I did stick my finger inside I could tell without any wetness that ILF really did their homework on this.

Just in case you can't tell, Tera is on the left :)

I have to say that for not being a real woman, this is a very close second as far as sensations and realism.  It really seemed to grab and stroke the right places.  I really must say that whether your married or alone, this should be something you own!  Women especially if you have a man, go out and buy him one for when your out of commission or just want to get kinky I can so many ways that you could as a couple have fun with this! I almost forgot to mention that the end cap provides more stimulation by screwing it down tighter and creating backsuction which makes it seem tighter on the inside.  The major difference between the lotus texture and the bumpy one of the Stamina Training Unit is that this indeed actually seems to simulate the back wall of a real vagina whereas the STU doesn't really seem to tickle the head.  I do believe this makes a major difference and yes ... very exciting.  
As a side note, I didn't know who Tera was but thanks to the internet I found out she is a porn star.  She looked like an attractive woman on the post card they sent with the Fleshlight and it is very gratifying that the opening is molded after... heh heh... well hers.  Interactive Life Form really lives up to their name thanks to the thoughtfulness of duplicating the opening of real people, porn stars no less.  The Superskin that feels oh so soft, and the Lotus texture that you will swear there is the real deal right there!

We HIGHLY recommend this game. It's definitely got a lot of potential for fun. "Fantasies" is built upon the game "Memory" where you flip over cards trying to make a match. However, this game is definitely not one you'll want to play with the kids.

The box contents are simple and in typical boardgame style: a stack of cards, some props, and the instructions. At first, you may wonder why the box contains some massage oil, a feather, and a paddle, but it makes more sense as you play the game. The cards are from several different categories, representing a room, a position, a female character, and a male character, and these are the building blocks of your fantasy. There are 15 of each character (male, female), 5 rooms, and 5 positions. My wife interjects that the character drawings on the cards are rather comical, so you won't take yourself too seriously. In addition, some of the character quotes are "James Bond" level of cringe:

"Your guitar plays a good rhythym in my little concert hall"

"By the size of your caucus, I see you approve of how I'm utilizing your staff"

"You have got yourself one fine set of griddlecakes!"

"Watching you move around in your sexy lingerie gets my redwood growing"

Several of the quotes (which are to help you get into the character) support the use of the props. 
To play, create stacks of each category card (character, room, etc). Lay out the match cards, and start flipping them over. When you make a match, you'll pick from one of the category card stacks building the fantasy piece by piece. Also, you get to choose a prop (I recommend adding some more to the mix than just the oil, paddle, and feather, from your personal collection). Essentially, you're playing a sort of "hardcore clue", deciding who does it, where, and how. You build a fantasy, and then one of you becomes the narrator, who starts it all off.

My wife and I loved it, however, we do recommend utilizing other props, clothing, etc, to make the role-play more fun. On our first try, we got "Laborious Lumberjack" and "Libidinous Librarian", "Hallway" and "She's on top", however, there's a "swap" card, so we swapped out the male role for "Astronaut" (neither was something I ever thought I would role-play, but I gotta say, I never knew exactly how many lame astronaut innuendos and puns I could come up with. Just imagine, things about the milky way, seeing stars, zero gravity, docking procedures?).

Building your fantasy in the morning (before everyone leaves for work or whatever they do during the day), gives you plenty of time to prepare. Playing the "memory" aspect doesn't take long, and can set you up for some action later that night. We would guess that this set is good for at least 30 or so different fantasies (though it does claim thousands). The love-making was playful, but intense. The role-playing throws you into a different world, and "Fantasies" definitely helps to build those worlds.
If I had one wish, it's that the position cards included more positions (they're all fairly tame), but other than that, I'm really glad we added this to our collection.  Maybe I'll give the lumberjack a try. We definitely recommend it, and think it helps with those times where you want to get it on, but can't really decide what you want to do (or can't agree). You won't be disappointed.

After the huge amount of evidence showing that it doesn’t work compared with comprehensive sex education, I find that Utah is going to take a small step towards coming to the modern age of comprehensive sex education.

The talking heads today reported that Senator Stephen Urquhart, R-St. George, is going to introduce a bill that would allow educators in Utah to teach students about contraceptives, but it prohibits "advocacy or encouragement" of their use? These Students would be require to take this class in 11th Grade?

Comprehensive sex education is about providing information to our youth on their attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexual identity, relationships, and (gasp!) intimacy. Sex education should help our youth make informed choices about their sexual behavior.

Living in Utah, I find that people take the “ostrich in the sand” approach to sex education. People don’t want to know what’s going on with their teens and they don’t want to be realistic about it. See, you have to understand, abstinence only education has not been successful from discouraging teens to have sex. It has been successful in it.

While Utah has one of the lowest teen pregnancy rates in the nation, let’s look at some facts about teens’ sexual behavior and why sex education should be started in middle school.

  • A sexually active teen who does not use contraceptives has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year.
  • The majority of sexually experienced teens (74% of females and 82% of males) used contraceptives the first time they had sex.
  • The condom is the most common contraceptive method used at first intercourse; it was used by 66% of sexually experienced females and 71% of males.
  • 48% of all new STIs are in people aged 15-24
  • The percentage of high school students who have had sexual intercourse increases by grade. In 2003, 62 percent of 12th graders had had sexual intercourse, compared with 33 percent of 9th graders.
  • The median age at first intercourse is 16.9 years for boys and 17.4 years for girls.
  • About half (48%) of teens 12-17 say they want more information about sexual health from their health care providers. Among teens 15-17 who have had sex, only 6 in 10 had ever seen a health care provider about their sexual health.
  • By 2002, one-third of teens had not received any formal instruction about contraception.


Eleventh grade is a good start, but comprehensive sex education needs to start in middle school. We should be providing information to students in seventh grade with sexual development and reproduction information, contraception and birth control information, and relationship information.

Studies have shown that sex education before teens reach puberty has the greatest chance of socially engineering behavior of teens. One of the biggest concerns of the “moralist” is that providing sex education will encourage our teens to have sex.  In a review of 48 studies of comprehensive sex and STI education programs in United States schools, there was strong evidence that these programs did not increase sexual activity. That’s right, these programs didn’t increase sexual activity. Some programs reduced sexual activity, and increased rates of condom use or other contraceptives.

Parents need to step up and start this education process at a young age by providing age appropriate information from where teens can build their knowledge of choices they have when it comes to sex and sexuality.

While I haven’t as of yet seen the bill that Senator Stephen Urquhart plans to introduce, I applaud this first step to get Utah out of the dark ages to provide comprehensive sex education to the state’s teens. I hope that we can pull our heads out of the sand and start providing this information at a younger age. We can make Utah have one of the lowest teen birth rates in the country to the lowest in the world.
